We have been studying the explorers for a while now and have been working on research and writing skills at the same time. Now students have picked an individual topic to pursue. They are finding resources--primary and secondary sources, both print and web--and are taking notes on their Mind Map pages. Once they have all the questions on their Mind Maps answered in detail, they will write up their information and their Works Cited and hand both in to me. I will correct their work and return it to them as soon as I can.
Then they will move into the presentation part of their project. Some students will choose to present their essays; they will do nothing else. Some will make an exhibit. Some will do an oral presentation or skit. Some will make a video. Some will create a website.
Students will make their presentations in class the week of May 28.
For those of you who have had older students in the AGATE program at the middle school, you will recognize this process as a preview of the History Day project.

From Education Week--According to the latest research, the two best predictors of college success are not grades and intellectual ability. Number one is “conscientiousness” (dependability, perseverance, work ethic). Number two is “agreeableness” (interpersonal skills, getting along with other people, working well in groups).
From what I’ve observed, I would say the same is true for life after college—jobs and careers, marriage and family life. Success comes more easily for people who are willing to work hard and who are able to cooperate with other people.
