Daily Dictionary

Does your child come home telling you about the new word of the day every day? Do you get to see the Daily Dictionary  or the Basic Cell sentence sheet every day? Here is a sample of what one page from the Daily Dictionary should look like! You will have to ask your child about the motions that go with the words. :)

Trish Torres very kindly made up a contact list for our class from the people who signed up on the Parent Curriculum Night. If you weren't at the meeting that night and want to be part of the list, email me and I will let her know.

Ask kids tonight about prepositions and onions!

Things to Check

The class is learning 50 prepositions. The ultimate goal is to be able to write them in order, spelled correctly. Right now everyone is concentrating on learning them orally. Test your child to see how many they can say! The list is in Style Stuff, in your child's folder in the writing section and on the elementary materials page of this site.

In the LA/spelling section of your child's 3-ring binder. look for the Basic Cells (Greek and Latin Roots): Human and Human Activity 1 sentence sheet. We have done the first two parts so far this week:
democracy = government by the people
philanthropy = giving money away (to help people)
See how well your child is doing. Can you help them write more complete sentences?

Look through the things I sent home. One was the invitation to the Fall Family Fun Night. So far I have 11 replies out of 27!

If you couldn't make it, I sent home all all the handouts and my notes, so I hope that helps.

Market Day dates are not on the calendar, so here they are:
  • Halloween
  • the day before winter break
  • Valentine's Day
  • one day the last week of school (TBA)

Also not on the calendar are the core words tests. They happen every Monday, 20 words at a time. We had the first 20 words Monday, Sept. 9, and we will have core words 21-40 next Monday, Sept. 16.

Parents, please remember that I will be doing a Curriculum Night this Thursday from 5 to 7 pm in my classroom. I hope every child can have one or both parents here! I will preview the year with you and try to answer all your questions. :)

From Education Week--According to the latest research, the two best predictors of college success are not grades and intellectual ability. Number one is “conscientiousness” (dependability, perseverance, work ethic). Number two is “agreeableness” (interpersonal skills, getting along with other people, working well in groups).

From what I’ve observed, I would say the same is true for life after college—jobs and careers, marriage and family life. Success comes more easily for people who are willing to work hard and who are able to cooperate with other people.
