Spelling Really Starts Next Week!

On Monday we will have our first core word spelling tests.

We will have our first vocab test on unit one--the one that counts--on Tuesday.

I expect to start math groups sometime next week too, as soon as we all finish our math placement tests. While we waited, we did our STAR reading and math tests.

Meanwhile we read "Intelligent Listening" together and worked on the questions and activities for the article together. We are using the concepts of respect along with intelligent listening to guide our classroom practice as we start the school year. You should find that article in your child's 3-ring binder.

You should also find the fifth grade chapter 8 science test that we did together as a practice. The class worked through the chapter to find the answer to each question and to cite each answer with a page number.

To launch our study of American history we looked at immigration at the turn of the 20th century. We read The Hole Book, which was written in 1908, and, as a grammar lesson, looked for nouns and verbs in the verses of the multi-page poem. Again, you can find the list in your child's 3-ring binder. Check out the really unusual verbs!

Already two-thirds of the class has done their poetry reading. I expect that everyone is reading their genre book and working on answering the worksheet questions thoroughly and with page citations.

Everyone has finished their job application. They are thinking about what they want to do for the first Market Day, which will be right before Halloween.

From Education Week--According to the latest research, the two best predictors of college success are not grades and intellectual ability. Number one is “conscientiousness” (dependability, perseverance, work ethic). Number two is “agreeableness” (interpersonal skills, getting along with other people, working well in groups).

From what I’ve observed, I would say the same is true for life after college—jobs and careers, marriage and family life. Success comes more easily for people who are willing to work hard and who are able to cooperate with other people.
